Meditate While You Run

Do you hate running? Can you not convince yourself to go for a light jog? Believe you, me. If you would have asked me 6 months ago how I felt about running, I would have told you I hated it. Even though, I have been running for a few YEARS now, I still have to pep talk myself a day before the actual run. I ran anything below 400 meters in high school, my wife actually got me into running longer distances 10 years ago. I felt so accomplished afterwards, but the whole time I was thinking, “I much rather just lay right here and die.” However, it’s the high after the run that gets you hooked. So I chase that feeling every run.

Running is my Therapy

No matter how you are getting your mileage – in a running club, with fam, or solo – it is still a one person sport. Challenge yourself to look at running as a time to reconnect with yourself. I have chosen to take my running days as the time to mediate and re-confirm my goals. As an introvert, this time is needed. Running is my therapy and I use it as an opportunity to rejuvenate and align my goals with reality.

This is how you can MEDITATE WHILE YOU RUN:

  • Thank Your Body. Start at your feet and thank them for carrying you to all that places you’ve been and will go. Move up to your ankles, knees, hips, etc. until you reach your head and thank them individually for what they allow you to do. I actually thank everything as small as my toes, shins, scars, hair… I can easily kill a mile and half thanking my body.
  • Focus on the Horizon. Keep your head up and take in your surroundings. Appreciate the birds, the trees, (if inside) the physique you see in the mirror, or listen to what’s around. Don’t worry about looking at your feet, you just thanked them – they got you! Focus on moving forward. (And you can breath better with your head up)
  • Say Your Goals. Many of us wear many hats. Sometimes our personal goals, life goals, and career goals get pushed out by grown folk’s responsibilities. To keep your goals forefront, think about them and envision what it looks like to reach for that goal and achieve it. How would your life be different? How do you want your life to be? Play out all the details in your head – Think the Law of Attraction. MANIFEST IT!
  • Repeat a Mantra. Any short phrase that motivates you works. A steady breathe helps here too. In through your nose two steps, out through your mouth two steps. Mantra Ideas:
    • “I am smart, I am kind, I am beautiful.”
    • “I am here, this is now.”
    • “Small progress, is still progress.”
    • In the words of Nina Simone “Young, Gifted, and Black” – it’s okay to take a song lyric that gives you that up and go.
